For my first goal: to introduce and implement new technology to my students throughout units of study and assessments, I will need to take the time to search for different assessment websites where students can take quizzes or test online. I have heard of QUIA before but I do not have an experience with the website. I also want to implement the class blog with my other three classes. My advanced students seem to be doing well with posting and commenting so I feel that I need to expose all of my classes to this experience at the beginning of next school year. I also would like to look online for different ways to implement the stories I teach in my language arts classroom. I will have a SmartBoard installed this summer so I would like to use that and the internet with all of my lessons next year.
To my colleagues in this course: Have any of you used Quia or another online assessment building/implementing tool before? Are there any suggestions out there of other tools I should or should not look into using for my students?
For my second goal: of promoting/modeling digital etiquette to my students when I am implementing technology or using information from another source, I would like to find websites for building reference pages in APA and MLA format. I remember using one in my undergraduate studies but I can not find it lately. I would also like to plan lessons at the very beginning of the school year to teach and demonstrate citing of sources to my students. I would like to find a WebQuest or PowerPoint on internet etiquette and safety to implement in my classroom as well. This way I am able to expose my students to the benefits and dangers of using information at the beginning of the school year.
To my colleagues in this course: Does anyone have a WebQuest or PowerPoint on ethical use of information or safety of the internet?? If so can you please send it or the link to me??

I like the idea of an online test for many reasons but I also have some concerns about it as well. The reasons why I like the idea is because it not only allows for various assessments but the computer would grade them as well which would make teachers lives easier. It also could allow for students to go back and work on the ones they got wrong which is really what we want, students learning. My only concern is if we no longer have students taking hard copied test what is going to happen when they take the state tests. I know back to this issue. I know that this might not help you but on edhelper.com you can create your own assessments and print them out. It is not using technology for the students but will allow you to create an assessment to match each students needs.
ReplyDeleteI also like your idea of a class blog I am going to try and set up a moddle page and on that page I want to have a class blog so we can use them for not only class discussion but a place for students to talk with each other about questions they might have. Like you I am looking for internet safety power points or websites so I can create a lesson at the beginning of the year to help students understand how dangers the internet can be and how to use it correctly in order to get the most out of it. If I find a site I will post it later. I sent our technology guy and email asking if he has any sites or power points because I know this year we had some major issues relating to the internet so you might want to check with your district and see if they have anything that could help you. They also might only want you teaching the internet safety rules that they have for the district. So my only suggestion might be to check around your school and district before using just any lesson.

ReplyDeleteI would still have to give our common assessments which are set up like the state testing in Kentucky. We have to give those by certain dates after each unit and post the result for Central Office to review. So my students would still be ready for state testing but they would also be experiencing assessments via technology.

RESPONSE #2
ReplyDeleteThat is interesting that you district makes you give your students a common assessment and they post them so the central office and review them. What does the central office do with the results if they come back bad? It seems like a great way to track the student’s progress but I can see how it could be very stressful for you as a teacher.
They compare our progress to that of other schools. It is pretty stressful sometimes because we never know how well the kids will do even if we have taught all of the information.
