Using the GAME Plan with Students-week7
The GAME plan process would be an excellent way to teach my students how to set goals that are attainable and work to achieve them. I have been highly motivated with my GAME plan and can not wait until next school year to implement some of the new tools I have found. In language arts I will be using a new program called Read 180 and all students will know their reading levels at the beginning of the year by a lexile score. I would love to have them use the GAME plan format to develop a plan for improving their reading level. I would also like for them to utilize the programs resources which are all technology based in order to help implement the plan they develop. I think this will be a great way for me to pass on the ideas of the GAME plan to my students at the beginning of next school year. This past year I was able to have students make goals about their work completion and grades. I feel this will be an easier way to chart, using Microsoft Excel, their progress and drive students to improve their reading skills.

ReplyDeleteI agree with you that the GAME plan is an excellent way to teach students goals and how to not only set goals, monitor them, and complete them. Are the GAME plans that you’re having them create going to be a long term goal? Or short term? For me I work with middle school students and a long term goal would be difficult for them to maintain. I would have to use a short term goal in order for them to be able to monitor their progress as well as be able to meet the GAME plan and feel good about themselves.
I like your idea about the Read 180 and having them know what level they start at and then have them monitor their progress. This seems like a great way for them see their progress and hopefully how far they have come. Why do you call it Read 180?

ReplyDeleteI would have students set a short term goal. We would evaluate their success/progress and the midpoint of the trimester. Students could then revise or create another goal depending on their accomplishments.

So the Read 180 just lets the students know their starting point for the year? I think thats a great program becausea the students have a goal to get above what they were. Teaching with the end in mind a little bit. I think too many times students don't know where they are at and where they should be by the end. The results aren't made clear to them.
ReplyDeleteRead 180 tests the students and gives them a lexile score. It also has a program that 30 of my students will be having instead of language arts for the year. These are my students that are more than 2 grade levels behind in their reading skills. It is used for remediation and enrichment. Great program!

Meghan,
ReplyDeleteYou found another meaning for the M in GAME...motivation. I agree that stating a goal makes me more motivated and likely to stick with it and continue progressing, no matter how slow at times. I also like how you plan to use technology (Excel) to implement teaching the GAME plan.
Great ideas,
Courtney

ReplyDeleteI think students need to have goals in order to see the progress they are making in school. No matter the subject, they need to see something concrete that they are doing to see improvement in their learning. I have to admit, I do not do a good job of this as a teacher and it is something that I want to do better with.
